762 – Mechanical joining of press hardened and tempered steels

In vehicle manufacturing, one solution for meeting the requirements for maximum weight reduction while at the same time ensuring the highest strength, is to use press-hardened boron-alloyed steels.Until now, these materials are mainly joined by way of spot welding.Since this joining method leads to the occurrence of thermal loads on the one hand, and on the other does not permit use together with aluminum in multi-material designs, it is the objective of the present study to qualify techniques of a different kind when it comes to joining these materials, and, to tap into the potential of functional elements incombination with ultra-high-strength sheet steels.
