P 1040 – New application possibilities for rear-ventilated metal facades with the use of stainless steel composite sheets

In the design of rear ventilated metal facades, stainless steels are often used. They convince by a characteristic appearance and a high longevity. However, challenges arise with large-scale facade elements. High rigidity requires larger material thicknesses and higher resource consumption. Increasing material thickness limits the individual shaping of the facade elements. The current requirements in modern facade design reinforce this challenge. Often individually shaped, three dimensional facade elements with sharpedged contours or organic freeform surfaces with soft transitions between individual form elements are desired.
The approach adopted in this research project ad-dresses these requirements and reviews the use of new stainless steel composite sheet metal for ventilated facades. The composite sheet allows for the same rigidity shaping with lower forming forces, in addition, the weight is much lower. After a basic material characterization, the proof for the application of typical joining, cutting and forming processes is provided. The application of further forming processes, such as the milling technology for composite sheets with stainless steel, has been proven positive. Another result is acatalogue of possible element geometries, as well as an illustration of the effect of static reinforcement by component joints. The implementation of pneumatic stretch forming as a new forming process for the design of cladding has been successfully carried out, current requirements in facade construction thus receive an additional design potential.
As a proof of concept, a demonstrator showing the potential of the composite sheet as a facade panel has been produced. An additional innovative side effect is the option of inserting welding studs, which help to fix the panels on the back.
In summary, the investigated composite sheet metal for the design of rear ventilated metal facades is a very good alternative to single-layer metal panel elements. Composite sheets with stainless steel are characterized by a very good formability. In addition, they are suitable for the application of established methods for facade design.
The research project was carried out at Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet Architektur und Metallbau der FH Dortmund und vom Institut für Fertigungstechnik der TU Dresden. FOSTA has accompanied the research work and has organized the project funding from the Foundation of Steel Application Research, Essen.
