Description

P 704 – Investigations into the combined spot welding and adhesive bonding of higher-strength steel sheets with new hot-curing and cold-curing adhesive systems

The combination of resistance spot welding and adhesive bonding offers many advantages, e.g. regarding the crash performance, the vibration strength or the corrosion resistance of the joined parts. Therefore, this technique is state of the art in many industries processing metal sheets. In recent years especially in the automotive industry the amount of applications of advanced high strength steels increased rapidly in order to reduce the weight of the cars and to improve the crash security for the passengers. Results with new and advanced one component and two component structural adhesives with high requirements on strength and crash performance for weld bonding of metal sheets up to strengths of 1650 MPa will be presented.
Additionally, the present work explains the influences of the welding process on the bonded areas and the mechanical performance of the completed welds influenced by the used adhesives. Furthermore, the influences of the adhesives on the welding process will be reflected.
The examined results of the joint characteristics regarding strength and corrosion properties provide a basis to the technical designer for the application of new hot and cold curing adhesives in combination with advanced high strength steels.
The research project (IGF-Nr. 16586 N) was carried out at Universität Paderborn, Laboratorium für Werkstoff- und Fügetechnik und an der SLV München Niederlassung der GSI mbH. FOSTA has accompanied the research project work and has organized the project funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology through the AiF as part of the programme for promoting industrial cooperation research (IGF) in accordance with a resolution of the German parliament.
