Description

P 812 – Load bearing capacity of fillet welded connections of high strength steel S690 for the construction sector

The developments of high strength steels lead to modern steels, with which slim and light constructions can be realised by saving material, weight and costs. However the modern steels require new considerations regarding their material properties such as strength, toughness and weldability.
A main goal of the research project was the development of a realistic, modern design model for the determination of the load-bearing capacity of fillet welded joints of highstrength steel S690.
In the framework of the research project experimental and numerical investigations were conducted for the determination of the loadbearing capacity of the welded joints of high strength steel S690 and the decisive factors of influence. Based on the experimental and numerical investigations a proposal for the design according to EN 1993-1-8 (2005) was developed which determines the load-bearing capacity as a function of base and filler metal.
By consideration the strength of the filler metal for the design an adequate selection of the optimal combination of load-bearing capacity and ductility is made possible.
By the development of new design concepts adapted by modern construction concepts as well as safe processing principles and an improvement of the normative load-bearing capacity an increased use of high strength steels S690 can be reached and the potential can be used.
The research project (IGF-Nr. 16097 N) was carried out at Universität Stuttgart at Institut für Konstruktionund Entwurf. FOSTA has accompanied the research project work and has organized the project funding from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy through the AiF as part of the programme for promoting industrial cooperative research (IGF) in accordance with a resolution of the German parliament.
