P 977 – Developing a high quality sandwich-panel envelope-system for office and multi-storey buildings including innovative assembly technologies

Within the framework of the present research project, the basics of an architecturally appealing prefabricated system for facades considering sandwich panels with a new mounting technology were developed. Occasion is the fact that sandwich constructions show further potential especially concerning multi-storey buildings. The investigations in this project were therefore conducted with a technical-architectural focus, which enhances the development of envelope systems for office and multi-storey buildings towards an architecturally high quality and socio-cultural acceptance.
The common use of the tongue and groove technique for industrial constructions alongside of the elements, allows optimized building physics and an economicimpact on the execution of the longitudinal edge of the elements. For technical reasons, the transverse edges with continuous production of the elements are not profiled. This requires a different execution of longitudinal and transverse joints and the provision of a horizontal or vertical arrangement of the elements. Through this, general conditions for the architectural conceptualization are dictated by the construction.
The “adapter solution”, developed in the present research project, now allows a visually equivalent joint design and the combination of horizontal and vertical installed sandwich elements in a façade. Coincidently, larger window areas can be integrated into the façades and existing element formats can be customized to conventional grid dimensions of office buildings. The structurally affordable, all-side line support of elements optimizes the load transfer and the fixing of the construction. Since existing panel formats will further be used for this solution, a cost-intensive conversion of the production of sandwich panels is dispensable.
In addition to the “adapter solution” more innovative mounting concepts have been developed. The results of research on global structural behaviour can also be used beyond the objectives of this research project. With the help of developed results in layout and elevation plan studies a grid for the use of sandwich panels in office buildings was created in the present research project and the desired modulated construction system could be realized. For practical use, this is in the present report shown and comprehendible explained by three macroscopic designs.
The research project (IGF-Nr. 16586 N) was carried out at Technischen Universität Dortmund at Lehrstuhl Stahlbau and at Ryerson University Toronto at Department of Architectural Science. FOSTA has accompanied the research project work and has organized the project funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology through the AiF as part of the programme for promoting industrial cooperation research (IGF) in accordance with a resolution of the German parliament.
